3D visual development for one of the maquettes I sculpted to set the visual direction for Meta Avatars 2.0, the relaxed creative-professional persona that anchored the masculine end of the style.

Meta Horizon - Business Casual Man

Studio: Meta Reality Labs

Production: Meta Avatars 2.0

Role: Art Director and Visual Development

Software: zBrush & Maya

Years: 2022-2024

Project Site: Avatars 2.0

A direction only proves itself when it holds across people who look nothing alike, so I spread the maquettes deliberately across gender, ethnicity, age, and background. There was no approved art for the next generation of avatars when I joined Meta Reality Labs out of almost a decade at Disney Animation, and rather than wait on a 2D pass that kept breaking in translation, I set the vision and sculpted it straight into 3D. Each maquette was a fully realized persona I built to test a different demand on the style, and the set became the north star the parametric systems, the ML pipeline, and the vendor studios on three continents all built toward.

This is the relaxed professional, a man in a tailored suit worn open over a bold floral shirt, coffee in hand, one hand in his pocket, an easy confidence that is harder to land than it looks. I gave him the masculine end of the range, where the read has to stay charismatic and approachable instead of stiff, and I used him to settle the harder material calls: a structured suit against a loud printed pattern in the same frame, grooming and hair with real shape, the contrast of smart and casual that says something about who the person is. Getting attitude and warmth into a still, neutral pose without losing the planar structure and clean silhouette the whole style rests on is exactly the kind of call I built the maquettes to settle.

Meta Avatars 2.0 launched across every Meta platform, with the new style rolling out to over a billion avatars. The maquettes are where I set that style, one fully realized persona at a time.
